AI Instagram Reels Generator: Building One Reel Start to Finish

An AI Instagram Reels generator won't finish the job. Here's the full build of one 15-second reel, step by step, with real timings.

An AI Instagram Reels generator doesn't spit out a finished video at the push of a button. That's the first thing to accept before you start. What follows is actual work, and it takes about an hour and a half. I'll walk through one real reel: an insulated travel mug, fifteen seconds, vertical format.

What these models can and can't pull off in a short clip is covered in a separate piece. Here I'm sticking to the practical side.

Step 1: The shot list, twenty minutes

I write three lines in a notebook, one per scene.

Steam rising off the mug on a windowsill, morning light, camera slowly pushing in. Five seconds.

A hand screwing on the lid, close-up on the threading. Four seconds.

The mug sitting in a car cupholder, traffic blurring past the window. Six seconds.

Skip this list and generation turns into aimless rolling of the dice. You get pretty clips, but they never fit together into an actual reel.

Step 2: Generation, about forty minutes

Each scene gets generated on its own, and the input is a photo of the actual mug, not a text description. Describe it in words and you'll get a similar-looking mug, not yours.

The first scene worked on the third try. Twice the steam drifted sideways, like there was a draft blowing through the frame. The second scene nailed it on attempt one. The third ate up five attempts because the model kept wedging the mug into the cupholder sideways.

Nine generations total for three scenes. That's a normal ratio, and it's what you should budget for, not the three scenes you planned.

For product shots I reach for Kling 3.0, since it holds object shape better than most. For rough drafts, when I'm just testing whether a scene concept works at all, I run something faster and cheaper.

Step 3: Picking the keepers, ten minutes

I watch all nine clips back to back and throw out eight of them.

The only criterion that matters: did the mug stay recognizably itself, not which clip looks prettiest. Two versions I actually liked visually got cut because the handle warped by the fourth second. Straight to the trash.

Step 4: Editing, thirty minutes

Three clips go into an editing app, plus music and on-screen text.

The strongest shot goes first, even if logically it belongs third. In the feed, whatever's on screen at that two-second mark decides whether anyone keeps watching.

Text gets added here, not during generation. Letters baked into AI video tend to flicker and shift shape between frames.

How an AI Instagram Reels generator fits into one evening

Add it up: twenty minutes on scenes, forty on generation, ten on picking clips, thirty on editing. An hour and a half per reel, assuming nothing needs a redo.

Something usually needs a redo. Two reels in an evening is my ceiling, and when someone claims they're cranking out five, I figure they're either skipping the selection step or not editing at all.

How many clips a reel should actually have, I still haven't nailed down. Three feels thin, six starts feeling choppy, and where the sweet spot sits depends on the music track every single time.

What breaks most often

Talking heads. Lip sync holds for a sentence or two, then drifts out of alignment. There's a separate piece on voiceover and lip sync if you want to go deeper there.

Sequences of actions in one generation. Picks it up, opens it, pours, drinks: the model will scramble the order or swap out objects mid-sequence.

Overly energetic camera movement. On short clips, nothing wrecks the image faster than a camera that won't sit still.

FAQ

How long does one reel take? About an hour and a half for three scenes, assuming no redos: twenty minutes planning, forty generating, ten picking clips, thirty editing.

How many generations does it take for three scenes? For me it was nine. One scene worked on the first try, another took three attempts, the third took five. Budget around that ratio, not around the scene count.

Do I need to upload my own product photo? Yes, that's essential whenever you're showing an actual product. Describe it in text and the AI will put a similar-but-different mug on screen, and anyone who's held the actual one will notice.

Where should text go, in generation or editing? Editing, always. Text baked into the video has a mind of its own by the fourth second.

Can you make a reel without an editing app? A single five-second clip, sure. Anything longer gets stitched from pieces, and you can't stitch without an editor.
